Why is MIT teaching poker? The course comes out of MIT’s Sloan business school, and the course description says poker theory and analysis can be applied to investment management and trading. Terminology and strategy is covered in eight lectures (you can watch the first one below. Ed Miller is an MIT graduate and an acclaimed author of numerous poker strategy books. He’s been playing, coaching, and writing about hold ’em full-time since 2003, and his books have sold over 250,000 copies worldwide.

As a game of incomplete information and uncertainty, poker is a prime application of the game theory concepts and decision making skills essential to trading. While traders make risk decisions based on the limited information they get from the markets, poker players make decisions based on hidden information as well, taking into account factors such as expected value and probability distributions.I thought this was a programming competition? What language is it in?
It is! To build a working pokerbot only requires both critical thinking ability and an eagerness to learn. However, an understanding of machine learning, algorithms, and data science can go a long way towards creating an advanced pokerbot. Competitiors can code in whatever language they want, but we only offer support in C++, Python, and Java.Machine learning? Algorithms? Exactly how much coding experience is necessary?
We welcome students with all levels of programming experience. Nevertheless, some previous coding experience would certainly be helpful. Although not necessary, we recommend you have at least one team member with some programming experience.What form of poker will it be?
We are keeping the game and tournament structure secret. You will hear all about it during the challenge unveiling in early January 2021.How many members can make up a team?
Teams may be composed of 1-4 players.How do I receive course credit?

Creating a functioning pokerbot takes no time at all. However, creating a competitive and strategic pokerbot will require more effort and experimentation. The MIT online poker course features video lectures, insight from instructors, notes and assignments.
“This course takes a broad-based look at poker theory and applications of poker analytics to investment management and trading,” reads the course description.
Originally taught by the Class of 2015’s Master of Finance student Kevin Desmond during this year’s IAP, the course compares the fine strategies of poker to that of finance management. Desmond is not only an accomplished poker player who’s competed at the highest level, he’s also performed as an analyst for the world-renowned Morgan Stanley financial group in New York.Mit Poker Course Review

The free MIT online poker course has a number of goals set for students to achieve:
– Create an environment for study of poker theory without the need for real-money wagering.
– Develop the basic foundation for decision-making in poker.
– Allow students to assess their own level of play and have a framework for improvement.
